What exactly is Data Science ? Who is a data scientist ? Explained in a simple way.

"Data Scientist" is one of the top three emerging jobs on LinkedIn. Ever since the past decade, the job opportunities for Data Scientists have increased exponentially, thereby making Data Science one of the hottest careers option at present. If you don't know what exactly this buzzword is, keep reading"

As you can see from the Venn diagram shown below, Data Science is nothing but simply an intersection of the three individual sets named:
  1. Maths & Statistics
The three topics under this are Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Statistics.
  2. Domain Knowledge -
Generally speaking, domain expertise means knowledge and understanding in a particular field. To put it simply, you should know your stuff.
  3. Computer Science -
We can say that Computer Science is the backbone of Data Science

Data Science is a concept to understand and analyze actual phenomena with the help of available data. In the Current century, the most valuable resource is nothing but DATA. The same data which is being generated at the moment while you are reading my blog, browsing through the internet, watching reels on Instagram, or buying stuff from amazon. Other sources include sensor devices, Surveys, observation studies, research works, etc.
All these data are used by data scientists to generate insights and predictions.
Some critical areas of application of data science include:
  • Healthcare.
  • Fraud and Risk Detection.
  • Banking and Finance
  • Targeted Advertising.
  • Astronomy
  • Website Recommendations.
  • Advanced Image Recognition.
  • Speech Recognition.
  • Airline Route Planning
  • Gaming
  • Augmented Reality
 and many more...

 Who is a data scientist?

In the book, Doing Data Science, the author describes a data scientist as:

More generally, a data scientist is someone who knows how to extract  meaning from and interpret data, which requires both tools and methods from statistics and machine learning, as well as being human

Source: O’Neil, C., and Schutt, R. Doing Data Science. First edition.

So data scientist is a person who collects, analyzes, and interprets a large amount of data with the help of statistics and machine learning tools and skills.
So a generalized way of saying the roles of a Data scientist will be like this
  • Undertaking data collection, preprocessing, and analysis
  • Building models to address business problems
  • Presenting information using data visualization techniques
